Unit A – Cells and Systems

The purpose of the Cells and Systems Unit is to learn about the basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells.

Important Note: Before each chapter is introduced in class you should read and skim through the information. You should write all of the boldfaced vocabulary words within the chapter, in your notebook on a fresh piece of paper. Keep these in the Vocabulary section of your notebook and use as a study tool. This is a consistent expectation and will not be assigned. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain each chapter’s vocabulary.

Chapter 1: Cells

Key Idea 1 – Living things share many characteristics.

Key Idea 2 – All living things are made up of one or more cells.

Key Idea 3  – Animal and plant cells are similar in some ways and different in other ways.

Key Idea 4 – Technology helps us learn about the structures and functions of cells.

Key Idea 5 – Substances move in and out of cells.

Chapter 2: Cells and Cell Systems

Key Idea 1 – Unicellular organisms perform the same basic functions as multicellular organisms.

Key Idea 2 – Cells are specialized to carry out specific functions.

Key Idea 3 – Cells are generally more efficient when they work together to perform a specific function.

Key Idea 4 – Cells in the human body are organized into tissues.

Key Idea 5 – Groups of tissues are organized into organs. Groups of organs are referred to as organ systems.

Key Idea 6 – Some diseases are caused when cells are invaded by microscopic living things.

Key Idea 7 – Your health depends on how well your cell systems work together.

Chapter 3: Human Body Systems

Key Idea 1 – Animals have two main types of systems – those that obtain and use nutrients and remove waste; and those that control the functions of the body.

Key Idea 2 – Animal systems cannot function properly without other systems.

Key Idea 3 – Humans have a natural system that protects them from foreign invaders.
