A fraction is a part of something. Fifty cents is a fraction of a dollar.
The 2 numbers in a fraction are called the numerator and the denominator.
The numerator is the number on top; and the denominator is the number on the bottom.
The numerator tells you how many parts you have. (part of the whole as in 50¢)
The denominator tells you how many parts there are in total. (how many parts make up the whole as in $1.00)
Proper / Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Proper Fraction = a fraction in which the numerator is less than the denominator. The value of a proper fraction is always less than 1 whole. ¼; ½; ¾ etc.
